Chueca is one of the most famous neighborhoods of Madrid. Its liberal and fashionable atmosphere is well known in all Madrid, not only to be known as the “gay district” of the capital, also for its shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. If you’re in Madrid to study Spanish and you want to live in a liberal neighborhood with sexual diversity, Chueca is the perfect option.


Moreover, now is June, a month full of movement in Madrid, with activities, festivals and the most famous event in Chueca: the Gay Parade: an important festival in the capital, with concerts and activities to celebrate the equality and sexual diversity that you can enjoy if you are here to study Spanish.

In Chueca we can find an interesting Madrid; full of fashion, highly tolerant and alternative, and without leaving the city center, it boasts a renowned nightlife atmosphere as well as great cultural and leisure activities. A very interesting mix where the LGTB community has been very influential since 80s.

The neighborhood is close to the Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol.  In Plaza de Chueca you will find the Chueca metro stop. If you are living there because you study Spanish in Velazquez School, you can walk to the school in under 20 minutes, taking a pleasant tour of the city center or by bus or metro.

Restaurants and bars

Following the maxim of modernity, in Chueca we can find restaurants and bars that cater for everyone. The district presents a huge gastronomic offer, from the most extravagant and modern dishes to a typical “cocido madrileño”, another explanation for Checa´s diversity.

Although if you are looking for some very typical foods of Spain and of Madrid, the best option is “tapas”. A wonderful choice to tapas is “el Mercado de San Antón”, a sure hit to have a beer with friends.

Leisure and culture

Chueca offers fun for every taste. Is a modern zone close to art galleries and theaters where you find a great cultural offer very alternative. For example, near to Chueca, we recommend you “Microteatro por dinero”, a little local where you can see shorts and interesting theaters plays.

Besides, you can find all kinds of shops: markets, clothes shops, book shops, gym, sex shops, beauty centers, etc… A little microcosm in the city where you can find all you are looking for.

The nightlife

The best of the district, without doubts, is its diverse and alternative environment when night falls. A very particular place where you can find a lot of clubs, discos and pubs to spend a special and great night. You can breathe the liberty and tolerance in these streets and its locals.

The Gay Pride Festival

Beloved by the most liberal and lighthearted Madrid, and hated by the most conservatives, the Gay Pride Festivals have become in a very important annual meeting in Madrid for the LGTB community from all the world, people who want to live the experience with Madrid full of colors by a few days.

A party to celebrate the freedom and the respect, that begins in 1997 with a few floats crossing the Chueca district . Nowadays, they are well know in all the world by the LGTB community thanks to from 2007 the festival has been internationally awarded as “The best Gay Event of the World”.

This year, the Festival is celebrated from the 29th of june to the 3rd of july, four days full of activities and concerts that will do that you see Madrid with others eyes if you are here to study spanish. The Festival program is in the official page, where you can see the planning of the week.
